New York Courts
The Supreme Court is the trial court of unlimited original jurisdiction, but it generally hears cases that are outside the jurisdiction of other trial courts of more limited jurisdiction. In New York City, the Court exercises civil jurisdiction and jurisdiction over felony charges.
The NYC Criminal Court handles misdemeanors (crimes punishable by fine or imprisonment of up to one year) & lesser offenses. The Court also conducts arraignments and preliminary hearings for felonies (crimes punishable by imprisonment of more than one year).
The Criminal Courts of the City of New York are located in all five boroughs.
Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans & Wyoming Counties
New York City Civil Court has locations in each of the five Boroughs. In Bronx County, the Civil and Housing Parts are located in two separate courthouses. There is also a community courthouse located in Harlem.
The Family Court hears matters involving children and families. New York City Family Court has locations in each of the five Boroughs.
